Est. reading time: 8 minutes
Picture this: It’s midnight. A full moon hangs impossibly bright outside your window. You’ve got your notebook open, candle lit, and something magical is happening—ideas are flowing with an ease you haven’t felt in weeks.
Coincidence? I don’t think so.
While we’ve all heard about planning rituals around the new moon or releasing at the full moon, I’m about to flip the script on conventional magical wisdom when it comes to creative ideation and professional breakthrough.
Here’s a spiritual discovery what changed my design thinking practice: the full moon isn’t just lunar energy! It’s solar power reflected back to us in darkness.
The Solar Secret of Full Moon Magic
Being real (celestially), the moon doesn’t generate its own light—it reflects the sun’s. During a full moon, we’re quite literally receiving solar energy at night.
This understanding transforms how we can approach ideation cycles in our work. While lunar-based magical practices tend to emphasize reflection, intuition, and emotion (all valuable), solar energy brings something different and equally essential to our creative process:
- The courage to be seen
- The power to implement
- The energy to build and construct
- The willingness to fail visibly
- The capacity to co-create and collaborate
Solar vs. Lunar Energy in Creative Work
Traditional design frameworks often separate “divergent thinking” (generating many ideas) from “convergent thinking” (narrowing to solutions). This mirrors the magical understanding of lunar expansion and solar focus—but the full moon shows us these energies can coexist in powerful ways.
Most magical practitioners focus heavily on lunar cycles for creative work, but I’ve found that exclusively moon-oriented approaches can sometimes leave us swimming in beautiful possibilities without the focused energy to bring them into reality.
The full moon—as a perfect solar-lunar integration—offers a unique energetic window for ideation that leads to implementation.
Solar-Powered Full Moon Ideation Ritual
I’ve developed this ritual through years of product & design work, finding that ideas generated during full moon periods tend to have both intuitive depth AND practical pathway to implementation.

Here’s how to harness this energy for your next brainstorming session:
1. Schedule with Celestial Intention
Plan your most important ideation sessions within three days of the full moon (the day before, day of, and day after). This is when the reflective solar energy is strongest.
Make note of which astrological sign the full moon occurs in, as this adds additional texture to the energy:
- Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): Ideal for innovative, disruptive ideas
- Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): Perfect for practical, implementable solutions
- Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): Excellent for communication concepts and systemic thinking
- Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): Powerful for emotionally resonant and intuitive concepts
2. Create Your Ideation Altar
Transform your brainstorming space by creating an intentional environment:
- Place a mirror on your workspace to symbolize the moon’s reflection of solar energy
- Position a yellow candle (representing solar power) and a white or silver candle (for lunar receptivity)
- Include symbols of your project or challenge at the center
- If you like crystals, consider clear quartz to amplify energy and blue lace agate to support communication of ideas. You can also select herbs or, my favorite, flowers: the humble daisy is great for this exercise
3. The Solar Reflection Visualization
Before diving into ideation, try this quick practice:
- Light both candles, acknowledging the dual energies you’re working with
- Close your eyes and visualize the full moon above you, bright and radiant
- Imagine that its light is actually sunlight, bounced back to you in darkness
- See this reflected solar energy illuminating your mind, activating both your analytical thinking and intuitive knowing
- Affirm: “I access both vision and practicality. My ideas shine with possibility and pathway.”
4. Cyclical Ideation Technique
Unlike traditional brainstorming that often follows a linear process, full moon ideation works in cycles that honor both solar and lunar energy:
First Quarter (10 minutes): Pure possibility. Write every idea without judgment—the lunar expansion phase. You could follow a “crazy 8s” style if you want.
Second Quarter (10 minutes): Reflect solar light onto your ideas. For each concept, write one concrete way it could be implemented. This isn’t about evaluation yet—it’s about grounding ethereal concepts with solar practicality.
Third Quarter (10 minutes): Collaborative illumination. If working with others, share ideas and allow the group energy to amplify and transform concepts. If working alone, step away briefly then return with fresh eyes.
Final Quarter (10 minutes): Integration. Circle the ideas that have both magical resonance and practical pathway. These full-moon ideas carry the power of both energies.

Beyond the Monthly Cycle: Seasonal Ideation
The full moon teaches us about rhythmic creativity—something most corporate innovation processes completely ignore. Just as the moon waxes and wanes throughout the month, our creative energy follows larger seasonal patterns too.
I’ve found that mapping major design initiatives to the solar year creates a natural rhythm that honors both generative and implementative phases:
- Spring Equinox to Summer Solstice: Primary ideation period (increasing solar energy)
- Summer Solstice to Fall Equinox: Implementation and testing (maximum solar energy)
- Fall Equinox to Winter Solstice: Evaluation and refinement (decreasing solar energy)
- Winter Solstice to Spring Equinox: Research and reflection (minimum solar energy)
By aligning your design thinking process with these natural cycles, you remove the pressure to be equally innovative at all times. Instead, you work with the natural creative rhythms that humans have followed for millennia.
Implementing Cyclical Ideation in Traditional Workplaces
You might be thinking, “This sounds amazing to do in the comfort of my own home, but how do I suggest ‘full moon ideation’ to my very corporate team without getting some serious side-eye?”
Here are a few ideas to go about it:
- Share research on chronobiology and how cognitive performance varies based on natural cycles
- Present implementing a cyclical ideation technique as a structured approach to balancing divergent and convergent thinking. You don’t need to mention any wooness to it!
- Propose scheduling an important brainstorming session during the full moon, and offer to facilitate with practices inspired by the ritual above! You can use this as an “experiment” to test whether timing impacts creative output. (Or just don’t mention that you picked the full moon intentionally!)
- Bring in the elements above as “creative props” to shift the energy of the space. You could select a meeting room with mirrors, add a bouquet of flowers to the long table, or pre-cut scratch paper into white circles.
You can incorporate witchy design thinking whether others understand or are privy to the magical elements or not. The practices create the conditions for breakthrough, regardless of the explanatory framework.
A New Approach to Design Thinking
Traditional design thinking is valuable for its methods and frameworks, but it often treats creativity as something that can be summoned on demand, regardless of timing or energy.
By incorporating cyclical awareness and intentional ritual into our ideation practices, we honor both the strategic necessity of innovation and the natural rhythms of creative energy.
The full moon teaches us that reflection and action, intuition and implementation, magical thinking and practical building can coexist in powerful harmony.
So check your lunar calendar, set up your ideation altar, and discover what happens when you brainstorm with the full spectrum of cosmic energy supporting your work.
I’d love to hear your experiences with cyclical creativity! Have you noticed patterns in when your best ideas emerge?
